What's In A Prayer?

1/31/2014

Prayer is just words, isn't it?
We use words every day.  All kinds of words in all kinds of ways.
But the magic to a word is the energy behind it.  How you propel a word forward what emotions you put to it, is what gives it the power to hurt, heal, comfort, etc.

So the power is not in the word but what's behind it.
In prayer we give thanks, ask for help, pledge support or ask for intercession so that we can deal with a crisis/situation in our lives.
In this way prayer comes directly from the heart. Many believe they need to recite long prayers or remember prayers from childhood to pray correctly. Nothing could be further from the truth.  We pray daily; even unknown to ourselves.  We ask for strength, give ourselves a pep talk, or just encourage ourselves to get on and do something. These are beautiful prayers as they are about you, for you and have all the love in the world wrapped up in them.

Most people will say they are directed to 'pray' when they hit a bump in the road, when things are difficult and all is dark around them.  They find themselves drawn to places of solitude, religion, or just get on their knees.  They find they connect with the divine in these and many other ways and feel that their prayers as more profound as they experience the emotion and wrap it in their words when they pray.

You don't need to be in a dark place to pray, you don't need fancy words or long prayers to recite.  You don't need to feel sad, you don't need to feel in any particular way to pray. Prayer is talking to God.  Although it may involve asking for help and assistance too, it doesn't have to always be - you can talk to God each day and give thanks, ask for inspiration, ask for guidance, and anything else that you need.  Remember that when it's from the heart and it is honest and true your prayers can be very powerful and you will find great peace and satisfaction in prayer.

Dress to impress.

Remember how much fun it was to dress up when you were little. The feeling of wearing sparkly and colourful items made you feel regal and beautiful. Tune into your inner princess and every morning choose something colourful to wear, even if it's just an accessory, it will impact on your mood and help you feel bright and light.

Falling Apart

Falling apart: it happens to us all. That moment when you realise all the threads you've been holding tight to turn to jelly and dissolve.
It can be terrifying and liberating too.
Initially we feel the fear. The fear of where to start from again! How to get it all together again! The amount of energy needed, the amount of time and at that moment not having an ounce of either to carry you through the next 5 minutes.
But take a deep breath.
You're actually free.  Yes, free.
It may all be disintegrating around you but it's freeing you from it, it's liberating you - now you can start again, anew.
The way you want it, how you want it.
Now is your time, now you can do it how you want it.
Let go of the things that didn't work, and grab hold of the new, the fresh, the inspired.

Coping With Loss

Loss comes to us, in different ways and at different and many times throughout our lives.
We may lose a dear pet, a loved one, a close friend, a relationship, a career even or way of life.
During these times we have many difficulties to deal with sometimes physical ones and always emotional ones.
But don't be hard on yourself, you're not alone, you're not the only person who has experienced this.  Many people will be going through a similar experience at the same time as you.
It is most often at times of celebration that we feel the loss more intensely; where the physical absence of the loss causes us more stress and sadness.  At times when you feel it the most try to consider these points.
  • Allow yourself to feel sad.  Don't bottle up your sadness, let it out.  It's a genuine feeling of loss and love, acknowledge it.  Facing your loss will actually help you to cope.  Set a limit on your sadness and don't allow yourself to dwell there constantly.
  • Spend time with positive people.  Positive people will help lift your spirits and keep you from dwelling in a small world of sadness.  They will be there to listen and talk to you thus allowing you to accept your loss and when in positive company you will find you are more up beat and positive yourself and will endeavour to keep this trend going.
  • You are not alone.  Many others will also be experiencing loss at the same time as you.  You may find solace in their company.  If you think it might be helpful to you consider connecting with them via your local grief support groups or online.
  • Stay healthy, look after yourself.  Taking care of yourself will not only help keep you fit and active but busy too.  It may encourage you to join a fitness group or gym thus adding to your positive approach.  When you are in a positive frame of mind you are less likely to dwell on sad memories and loss.  While keeping busy you will also fill  your time and this will have a positive benefit to your wellbeing.
  • Remember the good times.  Recalling happy memories may be difficult or you may feel accentuate your loss but it is a great way to celebrate the life and joys of the person you're missing.
  • Make positive new memories.  Creating new memories will help you move forward and help you from feeling stuck.  A fresh outlook and perspective can give you a new lease of life.

Making Friends

The world is a much better place with friends.
Having just left the Christmas season behind we will all have found time to spend and celebrate with friends.
Getting together, relaxing, unwinding and having fun can be very rewarding for all.
Just because Christmas has passed doesn't mean we let meeting our friends get relegated to the odd weekend or night out.  Try to get out and try something new.  Don't be afraid to speak to new people or strangers. Join a group or club, either a keep fit, book club or fitness club.
For in making friends we not only share of ourselves with others, we offer many skills and qualities that others may need at that precise moment.
Add another snowman to your collection and next Christmas you will have more friends to play in the snow with.

25 Hours A Day

This is a principle we could all include in our lives.
Living your life to its fullest and packing as much in as possible is a positive way of making sure you have a life that is lived, rather than a life that you are watching tick by.
Decide to get up an hour earlier one morning each week and see what you can pack into your day.
Live your life and take advantage of the time you have so you will live life to the limit.

The Snowman's Bell - (For Bernard)

1/4/2014

Harry and his sister Lucy were playing in the snow on Christmas Eve.  The weather was very cold and Mum had made them wrap up nice and warm.
"Let's make a snowman Harry." Lucy shouted as she swung back and forth on the garden gate.
"Great idea.  Where is the best place to build him Lucy?" Harry shouted back.
"I think," Lucy said, then quickly looking around pointed ahead of her and shouted, "Here beside the gate, then he will be able to greet all our guests over Christmas."
And so the two children set to work gathering armfuls of snow and building their snowman by the gate.
Picture
The light had begun to fade when Mum came to the door and called on them both to come inside.
"We won't be much longer.  Can we finish our Snowman, Please!" they begged.
Mum left the children to it, but as like all mothers do, kept a watchful eye from the living room window.
A short while later they stood back and admired their creation.
"He looks quite splendid." Lucy declared.
Harry however was not as impressed, "I think we shall have to find a nice hat and scarf for him.  Perhaps we could borrow one of Granddad's?"
"Maybe?" Lucy retorted.
"Evening Children, that's a rather fine snowman you have there." A deep voice spoke from across the garden fence.
The children turned around and found an old man leaning across the fence, he was wearing a tall hat and had on a heavy coat and a large scarf swirled several times around his neck to keep the chill out. He had a jolly face with rosy red cheeks and a red nose from the cold.
"Thank you." Lucy replied politely.
Harry felt he had to air his dissatisfaction and declared "I don't think he's quite finished yet, Sir!"
"Indeed young man, I would have to agree with you. He is after all missing his bell." the old man replied.
"His bell!" the children uttered in surprise.
Shaking her head Lucy retorted, "I don't think snowmen have bells, i think you're confusing them with reindeer."
"Not at all," the old man continued, "Snowmen always have a bell at Christmas.  It's tradition you know. I don't know exactly when it started but a long, long time ago there was a man who travelled all over the country selling bells from his large sack.  He desperately wanted to return home for Christmas to spend it with his wife and children, but it started to snow quite heavily and with a storm approaching he couldn't find his way.  He came across an old barn and decided to shelter there.
Picture
In the freezing barn he found a corner with some old straw and placing his bag of bells under his head for a pillow and wrapping his large coat around to keep himself warm, he drifted off to sleep and began to dream.
A beautiful angel appeared in his dream and told him she had been sent with a special message that he would indeed be able to spend Christmas with his loved ones.  He insisted that with the storm and heavy snow falling it was impossible for him to find his way.  The angel told him not to worry and that he would find his way with the help of his bells.
A loud bang woke the man as the wind caught the barn door and swung it with a loud thud.  He jumped up and ran to close the door.  The wind howled loudly around the barn and whistled as it blew through the holes in its walls.  The snow was billowing in all directions as it danced in the undulating wind.
He returned to his corner and settled himself again.  However, he couldn't find his sack.  He looked everywhere, even searching the straw thoroughly. It was then he heard it; a chiming in the distance.
He went to the door and looked outside.  In the distance he could hear it clearer now, it was definitely a bell.  He decided to leave the barn and travel in the direction of the chiming bell.  At times when he thought he was lost he would hear it again.  After a little while trudging through the snow he found himself at a crossroads.  He looked about at the little cottages nearby but there was no steeple to house a bell.  It was then he spotted the Snowman standing proudly in front of a tiny cottage and there in his hand was a bell.
He approached the snowman and although he felt a little foolish he said "thank you".

Picture
Then in the distance another bell began to ring.
Tipping his hat to the Snowman he continued on his journey, and so it was, all the way home for the bell maker.  He found his way there safely and spend Christmas with his wife and children.

A splinter of light fell upon the children and the snowman as Mum opened the door and called to the children.
"Come along now, you're tea is ready.  You can finish the snowman tomorrow."
"We're just coming," Lucy called back at her mother, "we'll be right there."
"We have to go in now, but thanks for stopping and telling us the story," Harry said to the old man.
"That's alright Children," the old man said as he started to walk away, "oh and Happy Christmas to you," he shouted back.
The next morning after opening their presents and having breakfast the children ran outside to play in the snow and finish their snowman.
To their surprise they found their snowman wearing a tall hat and he had a long brown scarf wrapped around his neck.  But most surprising of all in his hand he held a small golden bell.

Escape!
Set yourself free.
Don't resort to the usual patterns that have ruled your life.  Let them go.  Let people go who drag you down or make you feel miserable.
Leave it all behind and let this new year bring magic and wonder to your life.  Don't make resolutions you now will be difficult to keep, instead make a declaration of wise choices which will set your resolve and will power.  Write it out and keep it.
Use positive words, phrases etc.  Don't say 'I must go on a diet' instead declare you are going to make healthy food choices/or include more colour on your plate/or you will eat one more portion of fruit each day.  Be positive and live free.
