The door opens softly, I hear his footsteps and then a slight click as it shuts gently behind him. He walks over and sits beside me.
I fix my gaze on the burning coals as they glow red and orange, I know my body is exhausted and unable to move and I had no inclination to either.
We sit in silence for a little while.
“Was it worth it?” I ask. “I don't think i've accomplished very much.”
“I think so.” he replies. “That's just your perspective, what I see is much much more.”
“I'm tired. I've been travelling for such a long time now.”
“Yes your journey has been long, but you should rest now.”
“Yes, I am weary.”
“Close your eyes and sleep a while, all will be clearer when you wake.”
“Are you leaving?”
“No. I'll be here when you wake. We'll continue our conversation then. Rest now.”
“Yes, alright.” I sigh.
He begins, “before you sleep let me tell you a short story. The story begins as all do, exactly as each story has ever begun. The story has begun and ended many many thousands of times. But strangely enough each story is different, they all end differently and beautifully. Each story in itself is a true masterpiece, a blend of many different threads woven together to produce a unique and one off tapestry, depicting the journey of that story and fulfilling all that it set out to do and so much more. The journey chosen is individual and true and is a most magical, fulfilling and enlightening experience. Your story is just one of these magical threads, full of shimmering lights and dark mellow hues. It's woven about on divine cloth of brilliance so it creates a most uniquely flowing tapestry. When you wake we can talk about YOUR journey. You can tell me all about the light, the colour, the depth and contrast of your tapestry and how it has created such a beautiful masterpiece.”
“Yes, I would like that.” I whisper, my eyes gently closing as I fall back asleep.
